Everyone who is trying to learn singing properly in preparation for a future career or simply to keep the vocal health healthy know that one of the most important exercises they have to go through every day are the vocal warm-ups. You can get a good set of exercises from Singorama. It is just like a runner who has to do some light stretching exercises and some jogging before they go on a full out run. They never just run cold or else they injure their muscles and cause considerable harm, sometimes irreparable damage. So it is for the singer, the vocal warm-ups are essential.

The bad news is, there are many naturally blessed singers who are still in the middle of their “invincible” stage who like to sing and continue singing without the required vocal warm-ups. It is very easy to just start singing, just give them a microphone and a karaoke and off they go. But if that singer is focused on improving their skills, then they should warm up before they sing, even if it is just for karaoke. In any case, it really does not take long and it will reduce any chances of injuring the vocal tract, the throat and the vocal chords.

Starting off in the mid-range and then gradually going higher is the first thing to do. Never sing too low or too high at the beginning for either way without the warm-up can cause damage. Also, take note that when doing the warm-ups, if there is any discomfort or pain or just plain not feeling well, stop.

One of the most common but highly effective vocal warm-ups is humming and lip trilling (bubbling, flapping lips). Although the movie was pretty hilarious, refer to Disney’s High School Musical when the flippy Sharpay Evans started her funny trill. That is exaggerated but still correct.

Once the warm-ups are done, go ahead and start singing, but just like the warm-ups do not shout or scream out at the onset. Start slow and gradually reach for the higher notes. Singing should be limited to only two or three hours. Ever wonder why concerts never lasted longer than two hours? The reason: the vocal quality starts to get stressed out because the tract and chords are getting tired. Once the limit is reached, stop singing and do keep the vocal quality healthy by avoiding the foods that can irritate the voice, the air pollution in clubs and talking too much.
